Does anyone know what the residency requirements are for getting a MA driver's lisence? Like, if my permanent residence is Illinois, but I live in MA and have a mailing address and all of that, is that acceptable? What about the fact that I'm registered to vote in Chicago? Help!

Wherever you get a driver's license, you become a citizen of that location. For instance, Ginna needed to renew her license but could not return to Alaska and therefore became a Mass citizen. Therefore she cannot vote in Alaska or get any of the money they dole out or pay taxes there, etc. I have a Rhode Island license and I am officially a resident of the state of Rhode Island. If you get a Mass license, um, don't. You'll revoke your Illinois citizenship and Mass taxes are insane and no car insurance companies (at least not the major ones, which is to say, the good ones) will cover Mass drivers. They're notoriously horrendous. So ... see if you can get an IL license now, or when you return for whatever reason. Unless you plan to live here forever and really you don't know what you're going to do for the rest of your life. ;)
