I was just reading some posts in the queerchoice community, and I found it really interesting. I wouldn't say that I chose to be attracted to other females, but at the same time I get tired of "we're born this way" as a reason not to discriminate against us. I mean, sure, I think a lot of it is innate, but I dislike the idea that I am a victim of my genetics, and everyone should take pity on me and let me marry and adopt with other poor saps such as myself. Hrm.

I too don't necessarily think I choose to be a certain way, but I do think that I choose to live my life the way I am and not be in denial..Plus, even if it IS a choice, that shouldn't be an effective means of denying people rights given that in most constituencies religion is protected. And even then, the mere fact that policies worry about who should be protected is fcked up. Obviously some rules need to exist sometimes, but when it comes down to discrimination and/or benefits, in my book, the more people you don't allow into protection, the more inequality and the less justice you'll have.

It was good hanging out with you last night. I'm glad we were able to talk too, even though the security guard wasn't exactly hospitable.

I really think that a) it's pretty hard to define "choice" when it comes to physical attractions and emotional bonds, and b) it is a BAD MOVE on the part of the gay community to hitch our public approval wagon to genetics. I mean, it just may not work out - there is no guarantee the science will tell us what we want to hear. And then what? It's just no good, politically. Sigh.

hardcore. Personally, I had to ditch the "it's not my fault, I was born this way" trip. I mean, that's all well and good for those who need to feel that way so as not to have self-loathing, but I found it a bit redundant for me, considering that I already used that excuse for having an ironing fetish...and being black. That's when I knew I had to have another 'excuse' so I decided the reason I want to adopt and marry adn not have my own children taken away just cause I'm gay is "because I'm human." I know, I know--it's a little far fetched, but it seems to say everything I want. Besides, I already blame too much on gentics for that to be hip anymore. ;)

Yeah, the whole "pity me I'm making excuses for my existence" thing as a valid argument in identity politics annoys me. You choose your religion, you choose your politics, you choose your opinions-even if they seem inherent, they're *not* and yet, they are protected. In order for me to have basic rights, however, I have to claim non-involvement? Puh-leeze.
