I am a person who has always loved to learn, at least about the things I want to learn about. I like to become an *expert* and get all sorts of books on the subject. When I was 8, it was sharks. For years I collected books and read everything I could get my hands on about sharks. In fifth grade I checked a book on a famous marine biologist out from the school library that I had checked out two years before, and my old bookmark was still in it. In sixth grade I did a report for my lame-o science class using mostly knowledge in my head, and tidbits collected out of my personal library.
In middle school, it was the holocaust. A rather morbid obsession, but I believe it was fueled by two factors: my crush on a boy who was obsessed (and jewish, the first in a long line), and my deep need to read really ghastly things. I purchased Maus I and II, and was introduced to graphic novels.
In fifth grade, I picked up my assistant teacher's copy of Watchmen by Alan Moore. I was fixated, but couldn't see myself asking my mom for comics (classic literature or nothing!), so I surreptitiously read it every day.
I then moved on to AIDS, I was a walking fact book. It quickly lead me to reading about gays (curiousity, intellectual curiosity. Really.), which lead to my current year or two long stint with gender theory.
My recent purchases of Preacher by Frank Miller, my own copy of Watchmen, and a strong desire to read V for Vendetta indicate to me that my fascination which began in fifth grade still exists. So dammit, I'm going to read everything Miller and Moore wrote. Just watch me.
