2000 Top Forty

1. Who Let The Dogs Out - Baha Men

Though, there was a time I was kissing my girlfriend and this started playing out of nowhere, then turned off. Or was that a Green Day song? It permeates everything like some sort of musical mustard gas, leaving pain, confusion and woofing in its path.

2. Oops! I Did It Again - Britney Spears

True story: went to goth night with some friends. Had pink hair and already felt self conscious because of it. Some girl got up in britney gear on stage to dance to "hit me baby one more time" my friend and I, not feeling the goth, were very excited and started bopping. Til we realized the point of the act was for some guy to beat the hell out of her while everyone cheered him on. The blood was fake, but the smell of fear on my friend and I was very, very real.

3. Larger Than Life - Backstreet Boys

I typically hate the "we do it for the fans" songs. No, you do it for the love, validation, booty, joy of singing and money.

4. The Real Slim Shady - Eminem

Love/hate. Hate at the point at which I was forced to listen to all three of his albums on constant cycle for an entire summer every time I got in the car. But that was 2002.

5. Say My Name - Destiny's Child

Got kicked out of GuyHOP for singing this in the waiting area with a bunch of queers.

6. Party Up - DMX

7. It's Gonna Be Me - N*Sync

My first drag act was to a medly including this. I often don't count it because there was no drag really, just dancing. but I did write my campus extension on my a-shirt.

8. With Arms Wide Open - Creed

If I ever make a "think they're jesus" mix, it'll go on there. Other than that, not so much.

9. Thong Song - SisqO

There was a time when I knew all the words. That time was 2000.

10. Graduation - Vitamin C

11. Bye Bye Bye - N*Sync

This was also in the above medly. The first song was Jackson 5 Want You Back.

12. Jumpin' Jumpin' - Destiny's Child

13. I Turn To You - Christina Aguilera
14. Try Again - Aaliyah
15. Only God Knows Why - Kid Rock

16. She Bangs - Ricky Martin

I wasn't much of a fan til I saw a fantastic drag king/queen duo perform it. Then I was in love. I mean, not with Ricky, but he was the soundtrack so I gave the song a pass.

17. Lucky - Britney Spears

I will freely admit that this was on my running mix last summer.

8. The Bad Touch - Bloodhound Gang

I still know every word. My ex and I were dancing to this and she substituted in for "X-Files" the name of the movie we watched as an excuse to make out.

19. Faded - Soul Decision
20. Pinch Me - Barenaked Ladies
21. Come On Over - Christina Aguilera

Like every other bolded songs (and most of those I struck through) this song started playing in my head as soon as I read the title. Now if only I had a guarantee it would stop.

22. Back Here - BBMak
23. I Wanna Know - Joe
24. Country Grammar - Nelly

25. It Wasn't Me - Shaggy with Ricardo Ducent
26. I Think I'm In Love With You - Jessica Simpson
27. Higher - Creed
28. Forgot About Dre - Dr. Dre & Eminem
29. Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche) - 98°
30. Amazed - Lonestar

Lonestar's What About Now was my song with an ex I pined for most of my first year of college. I'm not a huge fan of Amazed, but the nostalgia points for the band alone bump this one up.

31. Feelin' So Good - Jennifer Lopez
32. If You're Gone - Matchbox Twenty

Baby you need to come home.

33. Music - Madonna

I despise this song with more energy than is probably advisable.

34. Heavy Things - Phish
35. Steal My Kisses - Ben Harper
36. Bent - Matchbox Twenty
37. Hope - Shaggy
38. Californication - Red Hot Chili Peppers
39. Better Off Alone - Alice DeeJay
40. Little Black Back Pack - Stroke 9

I now know for certain that I was more plugged into pop culture at 23 than at 18 - unlike my own list, I know pretty much everything on here and have specific memories attached to most of them. 2000 was the year I spent going out to SPIN a lot, which explains it I guess. Good times.
